GE 5KS254SAE6057 - GE's Ultra™ TEFC Vertical Hollow Shaft Motors are designed for inverter duty and feature bearing fluting protection for models with 40HP and higher. They come with 2 or 4 poles. These motors have NEMA Premium efficiency, NEMA Design B, and are approved by UL and CSA for component and insulation system recognition. They can handle altitudes up to 3300 ft and operate at 40ºC ambient temperature. The motors feature special balance to reduce vibration, shaft slinger bearing protection, and cast iron construction. The Wolong GE Ultra™ TEFC Vertical Hollow Shaft (VHS) motor is a Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC), premium-efficient design built for demanding vertical pump applications requiring high thrust, superior reliability, and inverter-duty compatibility. From 5 to 700 horsepower, it combines robust construction with advanced electrical protection, ensuring exceptional performance in severe-duty and VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) environments.
This motor operates with 2- or 4-pole configurations and supports voltages of 230/460 V or 460 V, providing flexibility across industrial applications. It delivers NEMA Premium efficiency and is designed for 60 Hz operation (de-rated for 50 Hz, as indicated on the nameplate). Built to NEMA Design B standards, it offers reliable torque and smooth startup performance.
The Ultra™ TEFC VHS motor carries UL Component and Insulation System Recognition and CSA certification for motors, confirming compliance with stringent North American safety and quality standards. It is rated for ambient temperatures up to 40°C and installation altitudes up to 3300 ft, ensuring consistent performance in a variety of environmental conditions. Each unit is precision-balanced to 0.075 IPS for low vibration and smooth operation.
The mechanical construction is engineered for strength and durability. The frame, end shields, fan cover, and conduit box are made of cast iron, while SAE fasteners ensure secure assembly. The conduit box includes brass bolts both on the frame and within the box for grounding reliability. A special Trickle Treat finishing varnish system enhances protection against moisture and contamination. The mounting configuration is a vertical P-base, and each motor is equipped with a stainless-steel nameplate and integral lifting provisions built into the endshield.
The bearing system is designed for high thrust operation and includes shaft slingers and bearing caps for superior bearing protection. Motors from frames 213–286 use Polyrex EM grease lubrication, while frames 324–449 use ISO 32 oil lubrication for thrust bearings. Bearings are designed for smooth, reliable operation under continuous duty.
The coupling system is non-reverse standard, with 320-frame and larger models available kitted for self-release or bolted configurations. An axial ball-style non-reverse ratchet is used to prevent reverse rotation, enhancing safety and longevity in vertical pumping applications.
Electrically, the motor employs a Class H insulation system with GEGARD2400 insulation, which is non-hygroscopic and anti-fungal. It withstands 2400 volts at a 0.1 microsecond rise time and exceeds NEMA MG1-31 standards for VFD operation. This insulation system ensures excellent inverter-duty performance and long service life in demanding electrical conditions.
The inverter capabilities allow variable torque operation from 0–60 Hz without a non-reverse ratchet, and 5–60 Hz with a non-reverse ratchet, making the motor highly adaptable for VFD-driven applications. Motors 40 HP and above include Aegis SGR shaft grounding rings—mounted on the bearing cap for 40–100 HP, and on both the bearing cap and insulated upper bearing carrier for 125 HP and higher—to protect against electrical bearing fluting and extend bearing life.
Each motor includes normally closed (NC) winding thermostats for models 40 HP and greater, providing built-in thermal protection. Additional electrical features include a 115V, 60 Hz space heater to prevent condensation during idle periods, ensuring readiness and reliability.
The motor has a service factor of 1.15, an 80°C temperature rise at 1.0 SF, and is rated for continuous duty. Every Ultra™ TEFC VHS motor undergoes NEMA routine testing to ensure quality and performance compliance.
Finished in buff epoxyester paint, the Ultra™ TEFC VHS motor provides strong resistance to environmental wear and corrosion. Its rotor is cast aluminum, delivering smooth operation and long-term reliability.
Each unit is backed by a warranty of 36 months from the date of installation or 42 months from the date of manufacture, whichever occurs first, providing long-term assurance of performance and durability.
