Features
The Wolong GE Fire Pump Duty Vertical Hollow Shaft (VHS) motors are engineered specifically for fire pump applications where reliability and consistent performance are critical. They are available in two efficiency levels — EPACT Efficient models ranging from 15 to 400 horsepower, and NEMA Premium Efficient models ranging from 40 to 400 horsepower. Both are 4-pole designs operating at 60 Hz (de-rated at 50 Hz as noted on the nameplate). The voltage options include 200–230/460V, 230/460V, 460 PWS, and 460/575V for the EPACT models, and 230/460V or 460 PWS for the NEMA Premium models.
Each motor is designed to NEMA Design B characteristics and features UL Component and Insulation System Recognition, CSA certification for motors, and UL Fire Pump approval. These certifications ensure compliance with stringent safety and reliability standards for fire pump operation. The motors are suitable for use at altitudes up to 3300 feet and in ambient temperatures up to 40°C, providing dependable performance in various environments.
Both models feature a special balance precision of 0.075 IPS for smooth, vibration-free operation. They include bearing caps and shaft slingers for effective bearing protection. The bearing design incorporates high thrust and extra-high thrust bearings, ensuring dependable performance in vertical installations.
The mechanical construction includes a cast iron frame, end shield, and conduit box, ensuring exceptional durability. SAE-grade fasteners and a Trickle Treat finishing varnish system provide additional strength and protection against moisture and contaminants. The frame size for the EPACT motors ranges from 254 to 449, while the NEMA Premium models range from 324 to 449.
Both designs include Polyrex EM grease lubrication for guide and 213–286 thrust bearings, and ISO 32 oil lubrication for 324–449 thrust bearings. Brass bolts are used on the frame and within the conduit box for corrosion resistance and secure grounding. Relubrication fittings are included for ease of maintenance.
The coupling system is non-reverse standard, available kitted for self-release or bolted configurations, with the upper half coupling ordered separately. A non-reverse axial ball-style ratchet prevents reverse rotation during shutdown, ensuring safety and pump integrity.
The electrical system features Class H insulation with the GEGARD2400 insulation system, which is non-hygroscopic and anti-fungal. This insulation is tested to withstand 2400 volts at 0.1 microsecond rise time and exceeds NEMA MG1-31 standards for VFD compatibility, ensuring long insulation life in variable frequency drive applications.
Both models are inverter capable, supporting variable torque operation from 0–60 Hz without a non-reverse ratchet, and 5–60 Hz with a non-reverse ratchet. The motors include integral lifting means in the endshield, vertical P-base mounting, and stainless steel nameplates for permanent identification.
Each motor features grey epoxyester paint for corrosion resistance, a cast aluminum top hat/fan cover, and a cast aluminum rotor for reliable operation. The service factor is 1.15, and each motor includes a 115-volt, 60 Hz space heater to prevent moisture buildup during idle periods. The temperature rise is limited to 80°C at 1.0 service factor, and each unit undergoes NEMA routine testing to ensure quality and performance.
The motors are rated for continuous duty operation, ensuring consistent and dependable performance when called upon during emergency situations. Every model is covered by a warranty of 36 months from the date of installation or 42 months from the date of manufacture, whichever occurs first.
