Freewave Omni Antennas

FreeWave's omni antennas are meant for operation around the 900 MHz industrial bands, e.g., one model that we considered operates from 890 to 940 MHz. Within this model and in general for FreeWave antennas, the gain is not uniform across the operation band. Some frequencies have more radiation intensity than others, and this unevenness is referred to as "pattern distortion." For the 5 dBi variant, we are looking at a horizontal beam width (i.e., in a plane with the horizon that goes around the antenna) of 360 degrees, which allows for coverage in many installation sites, where you need the antenna to radiate in many directions (like around the inside of a plant).

Consequently, it is vital to verify specific details when choosing from among these antennas. You must check the type of connector; antenna impedance (usually 50 Ω); and the type of mounting hardware you will need. You must also assess the antenna's environmental rating (which matters when anything is mounted outdoors or in an industrial setting). Lastly, you should determine whether the antenna comes with a cable or if you must provide your own. These details matter, especially for your Yard control panels, MST-VFD installations, and remote I/O telemetry.

FAQs

What is a FreeWave omni antenna used for?

FreeWave omni antennas are designed to provide 360-degree wireless coverage for industrial communication systems such as SCADA, telemetry, and remote monitoring. They are ideal for connecting field devices and controllers across wide areas without needing directional alignment.

What frequency range do FreeWave omni antennas operate in?

Most FreeWave omni antennas operate within the 890–940 MHz range, supporting common industrial and utility communication networks in the 900 MHz ISM band. This frequency offers long-range performance and strong penetration through obstacles.

What gain options are available for FreeWave omni antennas?

FreeWave omni antennas are available in various gain levels, typically from 3 dBi to 8 dBi. Lower gain models offer broader vertical coverage for uneven terrain, while higher gain models provide extended range for flat or open installations.

How are FreeWave omni antennas mounted?

Models are available with bracket, mast, or magnetic mounting options. Permanent bracket mounts are best for towers and fixed installations, while magnetic bases allow flexible placement on enclosures or mobile systems.

What makes FreeWave omni antennas reliable for industrial networks?

Their 360-degree radiation pattern, durable materials, and optimized 900 MHz tuning make them dependable for mission-critical communications. Combined with FreeWave radios, they ensure strong signal stability across challenging industrial and outdoor environments.

Antennas: Omni vs Yagi

Omni Antennas can pick-up signals coming from all directions. They are most commonly used for signal reception over a large area where the potential location of any incoming signal's transmitter varies. Therefore, unlike Yagi antennas, Omni antennas do not need to be pointed in a particular direction. Each specific antenna has a gain rating or dBi (decibel isotropic) number which coincides with the performance of the antenna. The higher the dBi rating, the larger area covered.

Advantages and Disadvantages

• Easy setup and install

• Can send and receive signals from multiple locations with just one antenna

• Limited on the distance it can communicate

• Not a great option from areas with poor signal strength
