[0m:4s] Hi I'm Josh Bloom, welcome to another video in the RSP Supply education series. If you find that these videos are helpful to you, it certainly helps us out if you could give us a big thumbs up and subscribe to our channel.
[0m:15s] In today's video, we want to talk more about radio communication. More specifically, we want to talk about some of the most common reasons why you might experience problems when setting up one of these systems or trying to communicate via an industrial radio network.
[0m:32s] Radio communication is one of the most common ways to transmit data from one location to another, especially in situations where the distance between the two locations becomes too far to use some type of transmission wire.
[0m:48s] Because using industrial radios is so common, it is not unusual to encounter different problems when trying to communicate with different locations.
[0m:58s] There are many different reasons that will cause radio communication issues. Today, we want to cover a few of the most common issues that can be encountered in regards to radio communication, with hopes that you will be able to avoid or troubleshoot these issues when it comes to using your own system. First and foremost, one of the most common issues that many people will come across when experiencing communication issues will be related to the actual configuration of the radio itself.
[1m:30s] Now, referencing radio configuration problems is a fairly broad description,
[1m:35s] and that's because depending on the type of radio, manufacturer, and many other factors, these configuration problems can be one of many different things. Some of the most common issues you might see are typically related to things such as needing to update radio firmware or downloading the latest drivers for the radio.
[1m:56s] Also, it is important to understand the type of radio that is being used. For instance, is it an Ethernet radio or a serial radio and depending on this there are different configuration settings that need to be accounted for. Other configuration settings that can potentially cause issues might be related to security settings on the radio, or whether it is a master or slave radio, frequency range and many other factors. The point is, incorrect radio configuration can lead to many different issues and is why it is one of the most common reasons you may encounter communication problems in your radio network.
[2m:35s] Another very common issue when encountering communication errors is related to radio frequency impairments. Again, this can encompass a wide variety of issues depending on the specific situation,
[2m:48s] but some of the most common impairment issues are EMI or electromagnetic interference.
[2m:55s] Emi is generated from non radio equipment operating near radio communication hardware.
[3m:2s] The electromagnetic field generated from this equipment can have a negative impact on the reception and transmission of radio signals.
[3m:12s] So make sure to install radio equipment in areas free from areas subject to EMI. Another issue related to this topic is improper cable selection which can degrade the signal or possibly limit the power of the radio signal. Improper radio and or antenna installation methods can also lead to communication failure.
[3m:34s] Common installation mistakes include things such as loose cable connections, installation of damaged cables running data cables in line with power cables and many other issues. In regards to antenna installation, it is important to make sure that you have good line of sight. It is important to limit or eliminate any potential obstructions that could cause communication failure.
[4m:0s] Even something like a chain link fence can have a negative impact on a radio signal, so it is very important to achieve direct line of sight with as little obstruction as possible. As you can imagine, these are just a few of the many different issues that can cause radio communication failures. However, the problems that we have discussed are some of the most common, and if you keep these potential issues in mind, you greatly reduce your chances of running into problems with your radio communication system.
