Grounding, Part 2 - Purpose of Grounding

Purpose of Electrical Grounding
-Protect individuals interacting with equipment -Protect equipment from potential damage due to a power surge -Keep voltage constant and in a healthy phase -Redirect leaking voltage to ground -Ensure fault energy is dissipated quickly and safely -Reduces electrical "noise" potential -Better function from surge protection devices Results from Improper Grounding -Increased potential injury due to lack of energy dissipation -Can cause delays in clearing faults which result in poor current flow -Increases potential of repeated electrical shocks to operators -Increases the possibility of a fire due to leaking or excess voltage -Can cause a reduction in operational efficiency of machinery
