The Wolong GE XSD Ultra 841 VSS motor is a Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) Extra Severe Duty design built for vertical solid shaft inline pump and high-thrust applications. Engineered to meet IEEE 841 standards, it delivers high durability, superior performance, and reliable operation in harsh and demanding environments.
This motor offers a horsepower range from 3 to 400 HP and is available in 2- or 4-pole configurations. It operates at 460 or 575 volts and is designed for 60 Hz operation, de-rated for 50 Hz where noted on the nameplate. The motor meets NEMA Design B characteristics, ensuring dependable torque and stable performance during startup and operation.
The XSD Ultra 841 VSS carries UL Component and Insulation System Recognition and CSA certification for motors, confirming compliance with major North American standards. It is rated for operation at ambient temperatures up to 40°C and altitudes up to 3300 feet. Each motor is precision-balanced to 0.075 inches per second (max) to minimize vibration and ensure smooth vertical operation.
The motor’s mechanical design is robust and corrosion-resistant, with a cast iron frame, end shields, fan cover, and conduit box. The conduit box is gasketed and rotatable in 90-degree increments for flexible wiring access. All fasteners are SAE Grade 5 for strength and vibration resistance. Bearing caps are cast iron and sealed, offering exceptional protection.
The bearing protection system provides an IP55 rating and utilizes non-contact rotating labyrinth seals—on both ends for frames 182–286, and on the drive end for frames 324–445. The bearing arrangement consists of deep groove ball bearings for the guide bearing and double-row angular contact ball bearings for the thrust bearing, ensuring long life and high load capacity. The bearings are designed for an L10 life of 50,000 hours when direct coupled.
Lubrication systems vary by frame size: frames 182–286 use Polyurea grease, while frames 324–445 use oil lubrication for the upper thrust bearings. The design includes a stainless steel T-drain for moisture removal, and a ground lug in both the conduit box and motor frame for secure grounding.
Additional features include four lifting lugs cast into the frame for safe handling and installation, and mounting holes machined per NEMA standards for precise alignment. The motor uses a vertical P-base mounting configuration. A 316 stainless steel nameplate is provided for durability and corrosion resistance.
The fan system uses non-sparking plastic or bronze fan blades, enclosed in a cast iron fan cover, ensuring safety and long-lasting reliability. The motor features buff epoxyester paint, providing a strong protective finish for severe-duty environments.
Electrically, the motor uses Class H insulation with the GEGARD2400 insulation system, which is non-hygroscopic and anti-fungal. This insulation system withstands 2400 volts at a 0.1 microsecond rise time and exceeds NEMA MG1-31 standards for variable frequency drive operation. The XSD Ultra 841 VSS is inverter duty rated, suitable for INF:1 variable torque operation, and designed for PWM (pulse width modulation) inverter use.
The rotor is cast aluminum, providing efficient performance and long-term durability. The shaft dimensions conform to API 610 12th Edition standards, meeting critical specifications for pump-driven systems. The motor is finished to IEEE 841 requirements, ensuring reliability and resistance to contamination, vibration, and corrosion.
The service factor is 1.15, allowing for short-term overload capacity, with a temperature rise of 80°C at 1.0 service factor. The motor is rated for continuous duty (S1) operation and undergoes NEMA routine testing to ensure mechanical and electrical consistency.
The top hat is constructed of cast iron, matching the motor’s rugged frame design. Each motor includes a special Division 2 temperature code, with an auto ignition temperature (AIT) of 200°C stamped on the nameplate for hazardous location compliance.
