Grounding, Part 2 - Purpose of Grounding

Purpose of Electrical Grounding

  • Protect individuals interacting with equipment
  • Protect equipment from potential damage due to a power surge
  • Keep voltage constant and in a healthy phase
  • Redirect leaking voltage to ground
  • Ensure fault energy is dissipated quickly and safely
  • Reduces electrical "noise" potential
  • Better function from surge protection devices

Results from Improper Grounding

  • Increased potential injury due to lack of energy dissipation
  • Can cause delays in clearing faults which result in poor current flow
  • Increases potential of repeated electrical shocks to operators
  • Increases the possibility of a fire due to leaking or excess voltage
  • Can cause a reduction in operational efficiency of machinery
